What is an ECA?

An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is used to verify that your foreign degree, diploma, or certificate (or other proof of your credential) is valid and equal to a Canadian one. You need this report if you completed your education outside Canada and want to apply for Express Entry immigration programs.

Why do you need it?

To claim points for your education in the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP).
To attain points for your education in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
To prove you meet the education requirements for certain programs.

Note: You generally do not need an ECA for Canadian credentials.

Designated Organizations

You must use one of the organizations designated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Processing times and costs vary by organization.

World Education Services (WES)

One of the most popular choices due to its fast processing times. WES Canada evaluates credentials from all countries.

Comparative Education Service (CES)

University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies. Good for a wide range of international credentials.

International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS)

Evaluates credentials from all levels of education (secondary, post-secondary, and technical).

International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS)

An Alberta government service that assesses international educational credentials.

International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES)

British Columbia Institute of Technology. Provides evaluation for general immigration purposes.

For Specific Professions

Medical Council of Canada (MCC)

Required for Doctors (Specialist or General Practitioner) who want to practice in Canada.

Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC)

Required for Pharmacists who need a license to practice.

Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB)

Required for Architects (designated as of April 15, 2024 — verify current designated organizations with IRCC).
