What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is Canada's primary immigration management system for skilled workers seeking Permanent Residency. It manages applications for three federal economic immigration programs:

Candidates create an online profile and are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). The highest-ranking candidates are invited to apply for permanent residence through regular draws.

Step-by-Step Process

How to apply through Express Entry in 2026:

1

Check Eligibility

Determine which Express Entry program you qualify for (FSW, CEC, or FST). Use the eligibility tools to verify you meet minimum requirements.

2

Take Language Test

Complete IELTS General or CELPIP for English, or TEF/TCF for French. Scores are valid for 2 years. Aim for CLB 9+ for maximum points.

3

Get Education Credential Assessment (ECA)

Have your foreign education evaluated by a designated organization (WES, IQAS, etc.). Takes 4-8 weeks. Not required for Canadian education.

4

Create Express Entry Profile

Submit your profile online with personal info, education, work experience, language scores, and other details. Profile is valid for 12 months.

5

Receive Invitation to Apply (ITA)

If your CRS score meets the cutoff in a draw, you receive an ITA. You have 60 days to submit a complete PR application with all documents.

6

Submit PR Application

Upload all documents including police certificates, medical exam results, and proof of funds. Pay the fees ($1,365 CAD + biometrics).

7

Receive COPR & Visa

After approval (typically 6 months), receive Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and PR visa. Land in Canada to activate PR status.

Category-Based Draws 2026

Since 2023, IRCC conducts targeted draws for specific categories. These draws typically have lower CRS cutoffs (400-500 points):

Tip: If your occupation falls in a targeted category, you may receive an ITA even with a lower CRS score. Check the latest draws on IRCC website.
