For a candidate outside Canada, reaching NCLC 7 in all four French abilities is the clearest way to move into a pool with a much lower cut-off. From 5 January to 28 October 2026, IRCC held 12 French-language proficiency rounds. They invited about 60,500 candidates, more than any other round type, at cut-offs of 382 to 435. Canadian Experience Class (CEC) rounds cut off at 507 to 523 and healthcare rounds at 467 to 475. "Shortest" describes the CRS gap, not study time: reaching this level of French takes real work. This post covers Express Entry outside Quebec.
Key Takeaways
- The category needs NCLC 7 in all four abilities. You must also be eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Federal Skilled Trades or CEC program.
- 2026 French rounds: 12 rounds of 4,000 to 8,500 invitations at cut-offs of 382 to 435.
- French also earns CRS points: up to 24 as a second language (without a spouse) plus 25 or 50 additional points. The 50 needs CLB 5 or higher in English.
- IRCC accepts TEF Canada and TCF Canada. For TEF, enter only the "Équivalence ancien score" column. Results are valid for 2 years.
- Rounds are paused for rescoring, and French cut-offs after the restart are unknown.
Why French Puts You in a Different Pool
IRCC ranks candidates by CRS score within the group eligible for each round, so a cut-off is the lowest rank reached in that group. The table compares the largest 2026 round types, up to 28 October.
| Round type | Rounds | Invitations | CRS cut-off range | Main condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| French-language proficiency | 12 | 60,500 | 382 to 435 | NCLC 7 in all four French abilities |
| Canadian Experience Class | 18 | 57,750 | 507 to 523 | Skilled work experience in Canada |
| Healthcare and social services | 3 | 11,500 | 467 to 475 | 12 months in a listed occupation |
| Trades | 2 | 6,500 | 476 to 477 | 12 months in a listed occupation |
The gap of roughly 100 points reflects which candidates compete in each round and how many invitations IRCC issues, not looser selection. The latest French round, on 27 October, invited 5,000 candidates at 407. The lowest 2026 cut-off was 382 (19 August) and the highest 435 (16 October), both for 5,000 invitations. Our draw data post shows all 2026 rounds.
What the French Category Requires
- NCLC 7 or higher in listening, speaking, reading and writing, based on an approved French test. NCLC is the French name for the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB).
- Program eligibility. For FSW that means at least 1 year (1,560 hours) of paid skilled work in TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 within the last 10 years, CLB 7 or higher in an official language, and an assessed credential if your education is foreign. French at NCLC 7 meets the FSW language minimum.
- No work experience or English condition appears in IRCC's description of the category, but candidates must also meet the instructions for each round, which carry the full details.
- Ranking by CRS. Eligible candidates are invited from the top, and you then have 60 days to apply.
How French Earns CRS Points
French can score in two separate ways. The table is for an applicant without an accompanying spouse. With a spouse the second-language maximum is 22.
| Component | Condition | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Second official language, per ability | NCLC 5 or 6 | 1 |
| Second official language, per ability | NCLC 7 or 8 | 3 |
| Second official language, per ability | NCLC 9 or higher | 6 |
| Additional points for French | NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities, and CLB 4 or lower in English or no English test | 25 |
| Additional points for French | NCLC 7 or higher in all four French abilities, and CLB 5 or higher in all four English abilities | 50 |
A worked example: a single applicant with English at CLB 9 in every ability and French at NCLC 7 in every ability earns 4 x 3 = 12 second-language points plus 50 additional points, a total of 62. At NCLC 9 in French the total is 4 x 6 = 24 plus 50, or 74. Most of the value sits at the NCLC 7 threshold, and NCLC 9 adds at most 12 more.
TEF Canada and TCF Canada: Scores to Aim For
Results must be less than 2 years old when you complete your profile and when you submit your application. For TEF Canada, IRCC says to use the "Équivalence ancien score" column and not the "Score / 699" results. Minimum scores for NCLC 7 and NCLC 9, from IRCC's language testing page:
| Ability | TEF Canada NCLC 7 | TEF Canada NCLC 9 | TCF Canada NCLC 7 | TCF Canada NCLC 9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 207 | 248 | 453 | 524 |
| Writing | 310 | 371 | 10 | 14 |
| Listening | 249 | 298 | 458 | 523 |
| Speaking | 310 | 371 | 10 | 14 |
Every ability must reach the NCLC 7 minimum. Our CLB guide and CRS calculator use the same scales, including the TEF old-score scale.
The TEF Canada organiser lists four immigration tests: reading (40 multiple-choice questions, 1 hour), listening (40 multiple-choice questions, 40 minutes), written expression (1 hour, two tasks) and oral expression (15 minutes, two parts). All four are taken on the same day, and the certificate is valid for 2 years. We could not open the TCF Canada organiser's page, so check its format, dates and approved centres in India on the France Éducation international website before you book.
Realistic Preparation Time
No official body publishes a standard study time for NCLC 7, and it depends on where you start. Three things are known. All four abilities must clear the bar, so your weakest ability sets the timeline. In its alignment research, the Centre for Canadian Language Benchmarks places benchmark 7 at B1+, "a very strong B1" with elements of B2, so a B1 course certificate does not confirm NCLC 7. And reading and listening are multiple choice, so practice papers show your level quickly, while writing and speaking need feedback from a teacher who knows the scoring.
Sit a mock TEF Canada or TCF Canada paper now, compare each ability with the table above, and repeat mocks every few weeks. Book the real test only when mocks clear NCLC 7 in every ability with some margin, because a result is valid for 2 years and must still be valid when you apply. From no French, we would plan in terms of many months of regular study with a teacher, not weeks, and treat any promise of NCLC 7 in a fixed number of weeks with caution.
Risks and Trade-Offs
- Categories can change. The Minister sets categories each year. French rounds were frequent in 2026, but no rule fixes the same pattern for 2027.
- Policy direction favours French. The 2027 to 2029 levels plan sets francophone admissions outside Quebec at 9.5% of permanent resident admissions in 2027 (31,825), 10.5% in 2028 (35,175) and 12% in 2029 (40,200). These are targets, not category rounds, and may be updated once Quebec tables its plan.
- Rescoring does not help you automatically. The high-wage points apply to Canadian experience or a valid job offer, so a French candidate in India gains only with a genuine offer in a high-wage occupation.
- Language is not the only requirement. You still need FSW, trades or CEC eligibility and the usual documents and funds.

Free CRS CalculatorFrequently Asked Questions
What is the French-language proficiency category in Express Entry?
A category-based round in which IRCC invites the highest-ranking candidates with at least NCLC 7 in all four French abilities who are eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Skilled Trades or Canadian Experience Class program. It is one of IRCC's 10 categories.
What NCLC level do I need in French?
NCLC 7 or higher in each of listening, speaking, reading and writing. NCLC 6 in any one ability fails the condition, even if the other three are higher.
How many CRS points does French add?
Without a spouse, second-language French earns 1, 3 or 6 points per ability at NCLC 5 or 6, 7 or 8, and 9 or higher, up to 24. Separately, NCLC 7 or higher in all four abilities adds 25 additional points, or 50 with CLB 5 or higher in all four English abilities.
Should I take TEF Canada or TCF Canada?
IRCC accepts both and converts each to NCLC with its own table. Choose on dates, centres near you and the format you practise better with.
Which TEF Canada score do I enter in my Express Entry profile?
Use the column called Équivalence ancien score on your statement of results. IRCC says the Score / 699 results are not compatible with Express Entry.
Do I need an English test as well?
IRCC's description of the category does not mention English. An English test still matters: CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities doubles the French bonus from 25 to 50 points.
Will French rounds continue after the November 2026 rescoring?
Nobody can say yet. The Minister sets categories each year and IRCC announces them in advance. Rounds are paused from 3 November 2026 and no restart date is published.
